Abu Elephant Experience

Okavango Delta • Botswana

Abu Camp offers a rare African experience that showcases the magnificent wildlife and landscape of the Okavango Delta; a safari that will transform your perceptions of elephants, wilderness, and life itself. As a guest of Abu Camp, you are invited to walk with and ride elephants, to get a glimpse of their world and learn about their lives. By the time you leave you will feel a special, emotional connection to the herd that is both humbling and rewarding.

Elephant Conservation

The whole premise on which Abu Camp is based is that of elephant conservation. These largest of land mammals are a keystone species on whose conservation the existence of many other aspects of biodiversity depends. The great paradox of elephant conservation is that while many African countries are experiencing rapidly declining elephant populations, others - such as Botswana - have to cope with burgeoning numbers. Both declining and growing elephant populations present their own challenges with applied research and adaptive management essential in their resolution.

The Abu elephant conservation strategy therefore is based on research of key issues impacting the conservation of southern Africa's elephants through partnerships with different research institutions. Chief among these are Elephant Without Borders and Elephants for Africa, two forwardthinking NGOs based in Botswana that investigate important aspects of elephant conservation and behaviour.

Abu Camp

Pioneered in the early 1990s, Abu Camp has been running for 20 years, and as such is the original elephant safari experience in Africa. The vast 180,000 hectare (450,000 acre) private and exclusive Abu Concession is set within the unspoilt pristine wilderness area of the Okavango Delta. As the largest inland delta on the planet, the Okavango and surrounding areas of northern Botswana hold more elephants than any other area in Africa.

Abu Camp, while never forgetting its environmental footprint, aims to provide the very best in privacy, location, accommodation and service. Allowing all who visit to absorb themselves in a whole new world, the camp is a haven of peace and tranquillity, immersed within the natural rhythms of the bush.

Set in age-old riverine forest, Abu Camp consists of six airy tented units, each with its own unique décor and a broad tree-shaded deck overlooking the scenic lagoon. Each unit is en-suite and includes an outdoor copper bath. The many-tiered main area has spacious lounge and dining areas, a plunge pool, well-stocked library and study – even a gym for the energetic. Sundowners around a traditional campfire are followed by five-star meals complemented by award-winning wines. Guests can end the evening by sleeping in the Star-bed next to the elephant boma, lulled by the herd's low snores.

The elephant encounters include riding and walking with the herd through the bush. Abu also offers game drives, night drives, walks and mokoro trips to view the wildlife in the area.
